The significance and rapping clout of Curren$y is rarely articulated but remains ever-present in modern hip-hop. He has a fantastic dribble drive playfulness in his wordplay that keeps his eternal internal talk rolling. It’s a direct reflection of a rapper who cannot catch up to his child like imagination. He reminds me of the G back in elementary school who had you on the brand front and had the new rap CDs packed in his jansport. SNES and the Genesis steez. I can smoke weed and listen to him spit forever. #CovertCoup

Hamilton’s ultra eclectic but thoroughly impressive electronic scene is real. Hamilton allows artists ample opportunity to take in influences from a buffet of international sounds that filter through Southern Ontario. Supa83 recently put on his first live performance and crushed it, letting loose an orchestra of electronic funk I’ve yet to hear from anyone.

I met Meezy over twitter when he was still going to Syracuse. Him and his partner in streetwear crime John (Swaggerdap) were ready to leave college and take on the world full-time. Twitter hadn’t quite taken off into the mainstream conscience. It was obvious to the trained eye that songwriters were having their way on the new platform letting their natural talents deflower the 140, mesmerizing followers with every tweet. After I stopped following John Mayer, Meezy was the one cat who could still deliver a perfectly worded almost effortless tweet that communicated so much. From Durkl to Peedi Crack’s career choices, Meezy could say anything and all you could do was nod in agreement. It occurred to me one day that Meezy was too good to just micro-publish and entertain internet addicts no, he had to be a handsomely-paid ghostwriter, poet or underground oratory overlord. Turns out he was in the bunker churning out “At The Start Of My Decade” a collection of poems and other goodies that is now undergoing publishing. Meezy also runs one of my favourite blogs on the internet (SongZiGe) a blog that further illustrates this New Yorker’s endless talents. To download and check out all the details head over to SongZiGe.

The Shing Shing Regime was formed over time in the geographical location that is now known as Canada. Having all been raised and brought up under the study of ”Golden Era” Hip-Hop, all members of the group took a first hand interest in the various expressions of the culture (i.e. rhyming, break-dancing, graffiti and dj-ing) at a young age. Further, being exposed to other genres of music (ex. Reggae, Rock, Funk, Soul, Jazz and R & B) help shape what would eventually become the “Shing Shing” sound.

The group consist’s of MCs Cee Self 7, Born “Absolute” Truth & “The Future Buddha” DJ Akiin (pronounced Ah-keen). “Shing”, as described by the group, represents a “sharp mentality” and is the exemplification of an individual’s best parts or talents. An acronymn, representing this idea, “Shining His (or Her) Innate Natural Gifts” further illustrates this ideal.

Tired of the same old, the group’s purpose is to bring back a certain level of civilization and love back to music. Shing Shing Regime have been featured on mixtapes in both Canada and the U.S. They have opened for Vast Aire (Cannibal Ox), Reflection Eternal (Talib Kweli and DJ Hi-Tek), Hell Razah (of Sunz of Man) and the GZA (Wu-Tang Clan).

Their debut full-length EP(Edutainment Project) THE INVINCIBLE SWORDPLAY has been slated for fourth-quarter 2010 release and anticipation is high on both sides of the border and abroad.

A new act is magic, a powerful synthesis of musical histories. Weathered by the cultural, social and geographical landscapes of Southern Ontario, Canadian Winter is a new group out of Hamilton’s fertile indie scene. They are Kobi Annobil (MC), DJ Johnny Fever aka J Fevrier XIV, Kojo Chintoh & Scotty P.

Raw, experimental, yet equally engaging, Winter’s sound tip-toes the genre sonically [electro panic x synth soul] while offering it’s unique weltanschauung in a confident, authentic hip-hop narrative. The group combines 3 seasoned hip-hop DJs and a child of rugged 1993 boom bap, the well travelled Kobi. Their first EP, a no non-sense showcase of versatile story-telling and polished-avant-garde production value, also gives us a glimpse of talented associated producers スーパ83 aka Supa K!d & Cheese Shop Paddy both accomplished pros who more than hold their own. The ‘The Bundle Up’ EP CD pack is now available in limited quantities.
